The Institute of Rajang Journalists (IRJ) in Bawang Assan in Sarawak held a pickleball tournament over the weekend. The event’s goals were to create “a positive and inclusive environment” and provide opportunities for media practitioners to show they are just as good in community building as they are in providing real-time, accurate news.

“First and foremost, I would like to congratulate the organising committee for putting together this meaningful event, which not only promotes sportsmanship but also strengthens the spirit of camaraderie among media practitioners, community members, and youths,” said Bawang Assan assemblyman Dato Sri Wong Soon Koh in his opening keynote. “Events like this create a positive and inclusive environment where people from different backgrounds can come together in the spirit of friendship and competition,” he said.

According to the affable assembyman, sports like pickleball do more than keep people physically active as it brings people together and encourage teamwork, unity, and healthy living.

The IRJ organised the competition specifically for local media members, and Koh was beyond grateful for their enthusiastic participation despite their hectic schedules as reporters and news purveyors.

“Today, you have shown that media professionals are also community builders and active participants in promoting social well-being,” he told the media members in attendance.

Koh also made sure to laud the journalists for their commitment to journalism and reminded them of their crucial role in society.

“In an age where information travels at lightning speed, your role in delivering accurate, ethical, and responsible journalism is more important than ever,” Koh said.

Aside from Koh, also present at the event were IRJ president Yii Souk Ming, Sibu Journalists Association chairperson Florence Nervyn, and Sarawak Public Communications Unit (Ukas) representative Jeannie Hanna Ko Abit.
